John Hajnal was the firsy scholar to examine marriage patterns in preindustial society. He divided marriage patterns into two categories of Western and Eastern European patternsm from which he explored their distributions and origins,There is some debate over to which of these two patterns the marriage pattern of Tokugawa Jaoan belongs. This paper, while discussing the relationship between marriage and othe dekographic considerations, attempts to shed light on characteristic features of marriage patterns in the Yokugawa period. The conclusion maintains that a strong argument can be made in favor of the position that the marriage patterns of Tokugawa Japan belomg to neither the Western nor Eastern European model.
