In Japan, with a survival rare for old buildings lower than that of most European nations, excavated archaeological evidence in playing an increasingly significant role in the reconstruction of the histry of building. This paper consider aspects pf the impact of archaeological discoveries on our understanding of japanese architectural history, and discusses problems conserning the interpretation and presentation of excavated evidence relating buildings. The paper , whish is divided into three parts, begin by discussing postwar shifts in the perception of the history of the built enviroment in Japan brought about by archaeological discoveries. This followed by an examination of some of the teshniques and problems associated eith reconstruction of buidings from archaeological date in Japan,In relatively rare cases, parts od the superstructure were among the finds, enabling the form of the buildings to be recostrusted with some confidence. Where only the pattern of post holes or foundations is left, the use of other evidence to supplement archaeological data becomes necessary. The combination of such material with exacavated data at best defines a range pf possible solutions, and it is further shown that alternative reconstructions of particular examples may lead to differing interpretation of their significance. Finnlly, there is a discussion of the presentation of conjectural reconstrustionsm including models, and the erection of full-saze replicas of parts pf vanishud historic complexes, which is currently enjoying something of a boom. The paper concludes by considering the debate about the desirablity of such replica
