The International Whaling Commission (IWC), the inter-governmental bory for manafement of whaling and resources, shifted from the science-based policies for the industry to the ethic-mased policies for animal protection., which led to the moratorium for mst whaling operations undes its jurisdiction. This paper critiaclly analyzes the discourse at the IWC for the most critical decades (1967-1987), and shows how scientific categories and arguments for resource management weere replaced by essentially ethical (thus culturally bound) categories and arguments. It also points out that English, the only official and working language of the IWC, plated a significant role in manipulation of the discourse.
