研究論文(Thesisses)Deinstitutionalizations of social care systems for people with intellectual disabilities have been advocated over 10 years by several researchers. Additionally, it was recently accepted in Japan, that homelike care services should be given priority over institutional care services in the social care system. This paper emphasizes the value of institutional care for people with intellectual disabilities, describing the life of Ichiro Hashimoto, who lived in the Takinogawa Gakuen as a resident for about 60 years. Takinogawa Gakuen is the first facility for people with intellectual disabilities in Japan. Mr. Hashimoto was residing in the Takinogawa Gakuen from 1925 to 1985 and achieved the best results in the highest quality of life. His accomplishments of health and social excellence are due to the effort of residential care workers (care staffs and teachers) religiously trained by the Christian founders. It is said that he gained celestial holy attachment superior to terrestrial maternal attachment. Recently, some researchers gave negative evaluation on the Japanese social care history. The aim of this study is to show that institutional care services are not all valueless.
