One of the main troubles during the hemodialysis treatment with a double-lumen catheter (DLC) is dysfunction due to inflow failure (ie., the inability to obtain an adequate blood flow the arterial port). In inflow failure catheters, the lumens are frequently reversed (outflow lumen used for blood inflow) and the reversal rescues the catheters from the inflow failure. However, the reversal also causes vascular access recirculation which in turn results in the lower hemodialysis efficiency. In this study, possible factors which make the recirculation take place were investigated using five types of DLCs. The recirculation was evaluated in a simulated vessel in which DLC was inserted. Recirculation rates of DLCs with standard dialysis lines were 0%. When the dialysis lines were reversed, recirculation was observed in all DLCs. The average recirculation rates increased as the inflow rate became higher and the flow inside the simulated vessel became lower. The rate was higher in types of DLCs which have both inflow and outflow holes reside in the same side of the catheter trunks.
