The effects of number for jumps on the hind limb muscle was investigated in the 13-week-old female Fischer344 rats. Animals were divided into three groups: sedentary (S; N=7), 40 times jumping training (40J; N=7) group or 100 times jumping training (100J; N=7) group. Animals in J group were trained with vertical jumping (40 cm high, 40 or 100 times/day, 5 days/wk) for 8 weeks. The plantaris muscles (PLA) was subjected to analysis for the protein content, protein concentration and the myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoform composition. The PLA weight and the relative PLA weight of group 100J were significantly higher than that of other groups. The protein content of the PLA muscle in group 100J was higher than that of other groups. There was no significant difference in concentration of total protein at all groups. In the MyHC isoform composition of the PLA muscle, type lid and Ha MyHC isoform composition of group 100J was significantly higher than that of other groups. Relatively, type lib MyHC isoform composition of group 100J was significantly lower than that of other groups. There was no significant difference in group 40J at all type MyHC isoform composition. These results indicate that there is the effective training threshold of the number of jumps in rat PLA muscle.
