The optical camera/video has been generally used as a method for recognizing the object in water until now. However, there are many problems as below; the recognizing distance extremely shortens because the intensity of the optical wave is remarkably attenuated in the water, the field of view is obstructed because the irregular reflection is arisen by impurities and floating mud in the water and so on. On the other hand, it is noticed that acoustic sonar using sound wave is an effective imaging technology in the water, since it's attenuation is smaller than the optical wave and the field of view is hardly obstructed by haze in the water. Development of the underwater security sonar system is in progress by the Special Coordination Funds for the promotion of Sci. and Tech. of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Sci. and Tech.. Practical acoustic video camera using the acoustic lens is produced experimentally as one of the element research and the practicable study in sea area around the Japan Coast Guard Academy is carried out. In this paper, composition and imaging principle of the acoustic video camera which seems to be useful as an apparatus for monitoring or image pickup in the water are introduced, and moving images taken in the actual sea area around the JCGA are reported. And applications and possibilities of the acoustic video camera in JCG agency are also mentioned.
