AEPs to speech and nonspeech sounds in the visually hadicapped persons were investigated with special reference to their dependence upon the auditory function substituting- their sensory disorders. Experimental groups were 1) partial sighted (PS), 2) light perception including the numerus digitorum (LP) and 3) total blind (TB), whose ages ranged from 6 to 19 years. The normal subjects were from 7 to 22 years of age. Japanese vowel /a/ and 1000Hz tone pip were presented. In both groups, interpersonal common features in the responses were clearer in an older subgroup. AEP to speech sound was composed of more complicated components with more delayed latencies, being accompanied by an additional negative 400ms shift, but the preceding positive 300ms component was found more clearly in the older blind. In both younger subgroups, variations of components, especially of N1 , were noticed in accordance with age. Similarity of the AEP waveforms was remarkable between the TB and LP, and between
