Isotopic fractionation of carbon and hydrogen inmethane and ethane during the formation of gas hydrateswas investigated. The gas hydrate samples wereexperimentally prepared in a pressure cell and isotopiccompositions of both residual and hydrate-bound gaseswere measured. dD of hydrate-bound molecules of methaneand ethane hydrates was several per mil lower than that ofresidual gas molecules in the formation processes, whilethere was no difference in the case of d13C. These isotopicdifferences in dD are enough small for discussing the sourcetypes of hydrate-bound gases using the d13C-dD diagram ofWhiticar et al. [1986]. These results may provide usefulinsight into the formation process of gas hydrates.
