Natsume Sōseki described plentiful chance encounters between gates and entrances in his works. This paper deals with a semiotic analysis of chance encounters in his late works. These encounters by chance occurred on the approach from gates to entrances, where wealth and poverty, pastand future, known and unknown, natural and artificial, chance and necessity, may turn into their opposite. Characters in Soseki's novels will be taken to an unexpected place by a chance encounter. They turn into detectives chasing mysteries and secrets. The entrances where they stand are the stages of lies and deceit. This analysis of Soseki's works focuses on their affinity with the thought of William James, Charles SandersPeirce, and Henri Bergson. They were the philosophers Soseki was committed to. Like him, they were critical of necessitarianism. Soseki shared their ideas about the philosophy of chance.
