Ammonites unexpectedly discovered established the Upper Cretaceous age of the deposits exposed along the coast of Nakaminato in the eastern central part of Ibaraki Prefecture. These marine Cretaceous deposits are classified into two formations, lower part, the Oarai formation, consisting mostly of conglomerate, and upper part, the Nakaminato formation, of alternated sandstone and sandy mudstone. Stratigraphically the two formations are conformable. Ammonites and an echinoid indicate the Upper Senonian age of the Nakaminato formation. Of particular interest is the close faunal affinities existing between the Nakaminato formation and the Minato shale of Awaji Island.
