The Futaba group unconformably overlaps on the uneven erosion surface of the Takakurayama group (Permian) and granite intrude in it. The stratigraphic succession of the rocks in the area is as follows. Tertiary formations of Joban Coal Field Takakurayama group (Permian) and granite The Ashizawa formation contains many important fossils, Inoceramus uwaji-mensis and its variety, Otoscaphites puerculus var., Baculites Yokoyamai, Bostrychoceras indicus, Yabeiceras orientale which is an index fossil of the Lower Urakawan. The middle and upper formations of the Futaba group have not an identifiable fossil, but the uppermost part of the Futaba group was likely to deposited at the Lower Hetonaian age and is unconformably covered with the Shiramizu group (Oligocene).
