In general, the hardness of metallic material is defined technically as the degree of resistance met by an indenter when it penetrates into the specimen. Understanding it mechanically, the penetration would come to an end when the load balances with the sum of stress component in the axial direction integrated upon the whole contacting area between the indenter and specimen. (1) From this point of view, at first, the author found the theoretical relations between the indenting load, forms of indenter, the depth (or the diameter) of indentation and the yield stress of specimen. Stress distribution on the contacting surface was solved by the slip-line theory. Secondarily, the recovery of indentation and the changes of indented profiles were determined on the basis of the theories of plastic indentation and elastic contact. To check these relations, indentations were made upon many kinds of specimens with different hardness. Then, we have known that the experimental data coincided well
