The chemical shift of MgK_α has been measured to find out the behavior of Mg^<2+> ion in oxide glass by using a high resolution X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The chemical shift was shown to be related with the oxygen coordination number of Mg^<2+> ion by measuring the MgK_α of some compounds whose structures were known. From the above relation the oxygen coordination number of Mg^<2+> ion in oxide glasses was estimated. There was a linear relation between the chemical shift of MgK_α and the optical basicity of the glasses. The chemical shift was varied with the ratio of (basec oxide)/MgO. It was considered that the oxygen coordination number of Mg^<2+> ion in oxide glasses was controlled by the basicity of the system and the ratio of (basic oxide)/MgO. Namely, the portion of Mg^<2+> ion coordinated by four oxygen atoms increased with increasing of the basicity of the system and the ratio of (basic oxide)/MgO. The viscosity of Na_2O-SiO_2-MgO system melt was also discussed in terms of the oxygen coordination number of Mg^<2+> ion estimated by the chemical shift of MgK_α of glasses.
