The laser multi-photon ionization technique was applied to a determination of nitrogen dioxide in ambient pressure nitrogen gas. The photoionization current (peak intensity) induced by pulsed laser irradiation at 337 nm was proportional to the cube of the laser pulse energy and to the applied electric field; however, the total charge (area intensity) was independent of the applied electric field. The calibration curve was straight at higher concentrations, but had a minimum at a low concentration. The detection limit was evaluted to be 0.6 ppm. P-10 gas enhanced the photoionization current.
