Taking the properties of scientic and technical Japanese documents, and human factors for Japanese into account, we have developed a well-designed prototype of an interactive Japanese document preparation environment for scientists or engineers. This environment, called IDE, has better human interfaces easy to understand and easy to use. IDE introduces such better interfaces as an improved Kana-to-Kanji conversion algorithm, a hierarchical dictionary system, and a screen editor for Japallese texts in its editing system. These interfaces are discussed in detail and their effectiveness is shown experimentally by using the first version of IDE.
