In order to clarify the promotion effects of perovskite-type oxides, the catalyses of perovskite-type oxides and their component oxides were investigated in propylene oxidation. The catalytic activities of perovskite-type oxides (ABO_3) have been shown to be intimately correlated with those of component B oxides (BO_n). In some oxides such as LaCoO_3 and LaFeO_3 the activities of B oxides were enhanced by forming perovskitetype structure (positive promotion effect), while in others such as LaMhO_3 and LaNiO_3 the reverse phenomena were observed (negative promotion effect). The close investigation on LaCoO_3 showed that propylene oxidation proceeded by the interaction of adsorbed propylene with dissociatively adsorbed oxygen. It turned out that the positive promotion effect in LaCoO_3 originated from increases both in stability of trivalent Co ions and in resistance to the propylene poisoning which was seriously observed on Co_3O_4.
