Plasma heating by the injection of fast neutral beams is thought to be the most promising way for a fusion reaction. The fast neutral beam can be obtained by passing fast ions through a neutralizer cell, in which ions are neutralized by charge exchange collisions. In order to convert ions effectively into neutrals, the pressure in the neutralizer should be around 10^<-1> Pa. Whereas, at the exit of the neutralizer, the pressure of less than 10^<-3> Pa is required to prevent the cold gas from flowing into the hot plasma region. This implies that the large pumping system should be installed at the neutralizer exit. In the present paper, the method to neutralize fast ions by a supersonic gas jet is proposed to solve this pumping problelm. The performance of this gas jet cell has been estimated, and it has been shown that the let cell could reduce the pumping speed by about 50%. The flow field structure of a two-dimensional supersonic jet has also been obtained experimentally by using the low density wind tullnel, and the neutralizing process of fast ions in the jet has been clarified.
