The structure of aged Cu-Co alloys was studied through transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculations based on the linear continuum elasticity. The electron diffraction patterns of Cu-1wt% Co and Cu-3wt% Co alloys in the early stage of aging bore the sets of satellites or shoulders along <100> directions flanking the matrix reflections. The satellites and shoulders moved towards the matrix spots with the progress of aging. The arrays of precipitates aligning along <100> directions were observed in the bright-field images. The calculations of interaction energy between pairs of particles implied that the particles in Cu-matrix have a tendency to align along the <100> directions at separations just greater than the touching distance of the particles. The estimation of self-energy of particles suggested that a spherical shape is more stable than cuboidal one when the volume of the particle is small and vice versa when the particle becomes large. In the specimens aged for long duration, some image contrasts characteristic of cuboidal particles were observed among spherical particles.
