A wave packet reflected totally at an interface between two media may undergo lateral shift and an associated time delay occurs. Two different theoretical approaches have been used to study the lateral shift. One is the stationary phase method and the other is Renard's energy-flux method. In this paper, a deficiency of the Renard's method is pointed out and a new method is developed based on the more accurate argument on the conservation of energy flux for a limited plane wave. This new energy-flux method confirms the consistency of the stationary phase method from the energy point of view.
