The injection of high energy neutral beams into plasmas is thought to be the most promising way to heat plasmas to a fusion temperature. In order to investigate the various problems associated with the ion source of a neutral beam injector, the ion source with an extraction current of 1 A has been constructed. The arc discharge characteristics and the distributions of the plasma parameters such as the charged particle density, the electron temperature or the saturation-ion current density in the ion source were clarified experimentally, and the effects of the source gas pressure and the cathode filament length on the saturation-ion current density were obtained. Since the thermal expansion of the ion acceleration grid may deteriorate the beam focusing, the heat flux to the grid due to the radiation of cathode filaments in the ion source was measured by thermocouples and was shown to agree with the theoretical predictions obtained from the numerical analysis of the heat conduction equation. The results of the present research may be useful for designing the high efficiency ion sources.
