A novel method to pursue photo-coloration processes in photochromic films without use of optical techniques was proposed. Photo-induced chemical changes in photochromic films could be detected by measurement of dielectric constants of the films. The photochromic films used were polycarbonate doped with 2 wt% 6'-nitro spiropyran. The dielectric constants of the films increased as much as 0.2 % by UV-irradiation and gradually decreased when photo-irradiation was interrupted, restoring their original values before photo-irradiation. The quantitative relation between the photo-induced changes of dielectric constants and the concentrations of colored species of spiropyran was derived from the consideration on the change of electronic polarization due to photochemical reaction of spiropyran. Frorn the analyses of dielectric constant-time curves, first-order rate constants for both photo-coloration and thermal fading processes could be evaluated. Also, the estimations of both activation energies of thermal fading reaction and quantum efficiencies for photo-coloration were shown.
