The effects of a transition layer with a linear density profile on high-frequency electrostatic surface waves on a half-space of isotropic, cold plasma bounded by a vacuum are investigated. The dispersion relation for the surface waves and the potential distribution in the transition layer are obtained in analytical form. It is shown that the temporal and spatial damping rates increase rapidly as the transition thickness increases.
