Decrease in saturation magnetization of very fine particles of r-Fe2O3 is studied on the basis of the presence of non magnetic surface layers with the mean depth, d. It was revealed that all of magnetic data reported hitherto could be fitted very well on the assumption, d=7.2A. On the other hand, for very fine particles of r-Fe2O3 prepared by dehydroxylation of r-FeOOH, the saturation magnetization was observed to be 15% lower than the values expected if d=7.2A.
