X-ray phosphor materials based on Sm-doped BaS and BaSO_4 have been investigated. Their bulk samples were prepared by a solid-phase reaction method. Sm ions were identified by the emission spectrum. Sm ions become trivalent state in Sm doped BaS. Whereas they become divalent and trivalent state in BaSO_4 samples. X-ray excited luminescence (XL) of red light-emitting for Sm-doped BaS and BaSO_4 samples was clearly visible in the dark. The XL emitted both Sm^<2+> and Sm^<3+> ions could be detected from Sm-doped BaSO_4. Photoluminescence (PL) of Sm^<3+>-doped BaS was observed when the samples were excited under its band-gap energy light of BaS. Photoluminescence excitation of Sm^<2+> in BaSO_4 was assigned to the transitions from the 4f^6 to 4f^55d state of Sm^<2+>, while that of Sm^<3+> was from the 4f to 4f state of Sm^<3+>.
