Yurika OKUMA The block with the characteristic of "the oldest downtown in Shanghai" was selected as a subject area for research. I analyze a block formation process and a construction type. And while a peculiar spatial structure and social structure take what kind of connection, it considers having resulted in formation. It sets it as the purpose of this research to clarify one block formation pattern with which commerce and habitation were united. Key Words : Shanghai, Li―Long, Modern block
