We adapted our apparatus for studies of collision avoidance behaviors against a rolling ball to a higher ball speed range. This modification has enabled us to assess the maximal avoidable speed as an index of collision avoidance behaviors. To determine the characteristics of the maximal avoidable speed, we compared it with the collision occurrence rate, which had been used as the index of collision avoidance speed.Collision avoidance behaviors were examined in 248 elementary school children, aged from 7 to 12, by using our modified apparatus. There was a significant inverse correlation between the collision occurrence rate and the maximal avoidable speed(r= - 0.67, p<0.001). Although the collision occurrence rate showed weak to moderate correlations with the minimal reaction time (r=0.49, p<0.001) , average reaction time (r=0.29, p<0.001), whole body reaction time (r=0.24,p<0.001) and physical activity (r= - 0.23, p<0.001), the maximal avoidable speed showed a correlation only with the minimal reaction time (r= - 0.34, p<0.001). Additionally, both the collision occurrence rate and the maximal avoidable speed improved with age. The collision occurrence rate particularly changed in children from the age 7 to 8 and 11 to 12. However, the maximal avoidable speed remarkably changed in children from the ages 9 to 10.These results suggested that the maximal avoidable speed correlated with the collision occurrence rate, but the contributory factors to these indexes might not be the same.
