Most Japanese people have not learned about radiation because radiation education had not been provided in junior and senior high schools from 1977 to 2011. When the disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station happened, people of Japan were filled with a fear of radiation. Their fear may not be based on scientific grounds. Since then they have been more concerned about radiation and desirous to get correct knowledge based on scientific grounds. The students of college pharmacy similarly have vague fears of radiation. They also seem to be desirous to acquire knowledge based on scientific grounds. The students of college pharmacy in the fourth year have a course of fifteen lectures on radio-pharmacy and one radiation measurement practice which determines the dependance of radiation count rate on distance, shielding thickness and shielding material. As it has been four years since we introduced the course in 2009, we conducted a questionnaire survey of the pharmacy students at the end of the course. We also asked them to remark on radiation measurement practice. As a result most of the students came to think that being sesitive to radiation is not the same as fearing it. They realized that they need to acquire knowledge of radiation based on scientific grounds. They understood the risk of radiation exposure and thought that it must be safe if they can handle radiation in a safe manner. Our results suggest that they can better understood radiation relating characteristics and protection principles through radiation measurement practice.
