This paper discusses the spectral pattern of the several forests obtained by the TM-sensor of the LANDSAT. The five categories were selected. They are two types of the beech trees, such as a sunny place and a shady place, and three different reforestation ages of the Japanese cedar, respectively. As a result, the all categories gave the same spectral pattern. It was however, observed that the reflection luminance of the beeth tree and the Japanese cedar had high standard deviation so that the spectral pattern between two categories overlaid one another. Therefore, it was clarified that the classification between the beech tree and the Japanese cedar was impossible based on the measured spectral pattern. It is also obtained that the luminance of the Japanese cedar decreases with the tree age. Relationship between the reforestation year of the Japanese cedar and the luminance for visual and near infrared bands give the high correlation coefficient. These results suggest that the LANDSAT date offers the useful information in order to investigate the growth condition and the transition of tree species after the Japanese cedar was reforested.
