千葉大学大学院社会文化科学研究科研究プロジェクト報告集第129集「多文化共生社会における言語管理接触場面の言語管理研究vol.4」村岡英裕編The study of contact situations can serve as a component of Welfare Linguistics,which provides us a deeper understanding and potential resolutions of language problemsin a society. This paper overviews the significance of the concept of contact situation, andexamines the nature of problems in post-modern societies of the 21st century. The paperclaims that there are at least three types of problems, thus three types of basic principlestowards them. Problems can be categorized, namely, as solvable problems, unsolvableproblems, and problems as communicative resources. According to the types of problems,we are able to select the principle and strategies, for instance, strategies to solve problems,strategies for getting along with unsolvable problems, and strategies based on positiveevaluation towards problems as communicative resources. The paper concludes that it isimportant to distinguish one type of problem from another, and this will become possible totreat the problems of participants in the situations properly.
