Deepening Vietnam's Integration with the Regional Economy:Opportunities and Challenges

This paper attempts to analyze the growing trade and investment relationships between Vietnam and East Asian countries as well as the opportunities and challenges of East Asian economic integration in a post Global-crisis period.Our analysis shows that,together with rapid changes in economic structures,the trade complementarities between Vietnam and East Asian trading partners have substantially increased, further enhancing the benefit of regional integration.Integration with dynamic Asian economies also offers important opportunities to expand export markets in the wake of the sluggish and fragile global economic recovery.More importantly,regional economic integration can promote Vietnam's participation into regional production networks and contribute the export diversification and industrial upgrading in Vietnam.The realization of the potential benefits of regional integration requires further improvements in business environment and human resources to attract foreign investment and participate in regional production networks.
