The buried recent marine deposits named the Dejima shell bed which are containing numerous molluscan shells, is distributed under the lower towns in Nagasaki city. About 100 species, which are listed in Table 1, were collected from this shell beds at Dejima, Nishi-Hamano-machi and Takenokubo. From the faunal evidence, it is inferred that the most of molluscs may have flourished in an interior part of the branch of the embayment.
