In order to examine the validity of the critical resolved twinning shear stress law, magnesium single crystals were subjected to tensile test. The twin markings appearing on the surface of the specimen were analized and the corresponding twin elements to them were determined with the aid of crystallographic glove. The arising order of the twin elements was compared with the magnitudes of the resolved shear stress upon them. The results obtained show that the critical resolved twinning shear stress law holds qualitatively except for the region near the grain boundary where the constrain due to the grain boundary should cause local stress concentration.
