Time series of atmospheric turbidity coefficient, β, are presented from. 1957 to 1979 for six stations in Japan. Atmospheric turbidity in large cities such as Sapporo and Fukuoka has shown a remarkable decrease in from the latter half of 1960's to the beginings of 1970's however, it began to increase recently. On the other hand, the turbidity coefficient at rural regions did not show any marked change in recent ten years. In general, these trends would be interpreted as the fruit of air pollution control. Nevertheless, it may be concluded that due caution should be still needed against the turbidity of urban atmospheres.
