Variations of Yamamoto's turbidity coefficient were studied in the period of the E1 Chichon volcanic dust veil for 14 stations in Japan. The most violent eruption of this mountain occurred on 4 April 1982. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) Compared with the levels of the year 1981, the maximun values of the anomalous positive deviation of the turbidity coefficient in 1982-83 ranged from 0.063 to 0.115 with the mean value of 0.090 for 14 stations. (2) These maximums were observed in summer 1982 at Okinawa islands and in winter at Hokkaido, which indicating that the main dense dust cloud in the lower stratosphere moved northward with the averaged velocity of 286km/month (9.4km/day). (3) At the Japanese stations, the effect of Mt. E1 Chicon on the atmospheric turbidity was strong and enduring compared with that of Mt. Agung (1963).
