This paper describes the experiments results on improvement of the analytical sensitivity of a quadrupole-based laser ionization mass spectrometer, which consists of a commercial quadrupole mass filter and a laser microprobe instrument. A cylindrical electrode, which was placed between the ion chamber and the sample, was employed as an ion extraction system, and a channeltron detector was used as an ion detector. Using the system, trace elements in metal alloys (Cu alloy and Al alloy) were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the ion peaks of trance elements were clearly observed, and present detection limits were found to be on the order of 1 ppm. Moreover, isotope ratios for several elements were measured, and compared with the natural abundance ratios.
