Recently, distortion of power source voltage in distribution power lines due to harmonic current has increased. Household electrical appliances that have a motor connected directly to a power source are affected by harmonic voltage in the distorted voltage. The capacitor motor (CRM), which is usually used in electric fans, is affected by harmonic voltage, which may cause, for example, lower efficiency or abnormal temperature rise. In this paper, the performance of the CRM, which is supplied the voltage which superimposes a low-order harmonic voltage on the fundamental voltage, used in the electric fan is examined experimentally and theoretically. As a result, the following were clarified: (1) The current and the input power of the CRM is increased according to the increase in the ratio of the harmonic voltage to the fundamental voltage. (2) The input of the main winding, rather than that of the auxiliary winding, is increased by the harmonic voltage. (3) The proposed calculation method is useful if the current of rocked rotor test is greater than the rated current and the supplied voltage of the no-load test is greater than the rated voltage.
