A questionnairing was conducted on ambulant diabetics, who received nutrition education 3 months before, to evaluate the effect of diet therapy by comparing the state of eating before the education and the state in compliance with the therapy after the education. The results were expressed on a maximum of 10 points to examine the improvement in scores after the education compared with those before the education. In addition, the points at issue were also examined with respect to the results obtained. 1. In any generation from 30 years to 60 years, the score after the education, in general, showed a significant increase compared with that before the education. 2. In all generations combined (n = 85), the score after the education, in general, showed a significant increase compared with that before the education (p < 0.001). 3. The items which showed a significant increase in score after the education, compared with the value before the education, in males were ''frequency in intake of fatty food" (p < 0.001), "food weighting" (p < 0.01) and "use of food substitution table" (p < 0.01), 3 items in total. On the other hand, such items in females were "food weighting" (p < 0.001), "recording of food taken in" (p < 0.05), "use of food substitution table" (p < 0.001), and ''frequency of eating between meals" (p < 0.01), 4 items in total. 4. The items which showed the significantly lower scores before the education in males compared with females were "frequency of eating out" and "frequency of drinking". On the other hand, the item which showed the significantly lower score in females compared with males was "frequency of eating between meals". Almost no improvement was observed in the score of ''frequency of drinking" after the education in males, while a considerable improvement was attained in the score of "frequency of eating between meals" in females. 5. The score of "recording of food taken in" either in or after the education resulted in a low value in both males and females. It is thus hoped that diabetics will be instructed to continue, if sometimes, ''food weighting" and "recording of food taken in".
