The questionnaring was conducted on a total of 129 ambulatory diabetics with the aim of finding out the goal of dietary management in consideration of QOL in diabetics. The details of these subjects were as follows: 70 males of 57.3 ± 9.7 years of and 59 females of 60.5 ± 10.2 years old. The treatments of diabetes which they had received were dietary management in 59 subjects, oral administration of drugs in 41 subjects and injection of insulin in 29 subjects. The following results were obtained. 1. Answers to questions about physical condition were as follows: "sleep well every night" in 44.2% of 70 male subjects and 27.1 % of 59 females subjects; "Have a normal bowel movement" in 41.9% of the males of 30.2% of the femles; and "Have a good appetite" in 53.5% of the males and 41.9% in the females. On the Whole, male subjects were in better condition than female subjects. 2. Among the subjects who selected the answer "Now making effort to reduce my weight". 31.4% of the males and 27.1% of the females selected tne answer "Reducing my weight is painful", indicating almost the same rates. 3. Among the subjects who selected the answer "Now keeping energy intake prescribed". 67.1% of the males and 54.3% of the females selected the answer "Feel hungry". 4. Answers to questions about drinking were as follows: "Have the habit of drinking" in 65.7% of the males and 15.3% of the females, showing differences between the sexes (p < 0.005); and ''It is hard to forbear drinking" in 47.1 % of males and 5.1% of females. 5. Answers to questions about sweet stuff were as follows: "Eat sweet stuff' in 32.8% of the males and 56.0% of the females; and ''It is hard to forbear eating sweet stuff' in 15.7% of the males and 39.0% of the Females. In both items, there were differences between the sexes (p < 0.05). 6. The answer "Take exercise 3-4 times a week" accounted for 67.2% of the males and 64.4% of the females. indicating the almost the same rates. Among this subgroup, 18.6% of the males and 27.1 % of the females stated that such exercise is a "burden", indicating a higher rate in the females. 7. The answer ''It is a burdern to continue to take oral drugs" amounted to about 25.0% of the subjects in all. On the other hand, the answer ''Injection of insulin is painful" accounted for as many as 62.0%. 8. About mental and social factors, the following results were obtained. The answer "Feel uneasy about complications of diabetes" accounted for 89.2% of the subjectes in all without differences between the sexes. The answer "Famliy members are cooperative in treatment of diabetes" amounted to 51.1 % of the males and 34.1 % of the females (p< 0.05). From this difference, it was considered that cooperation from wife to husband as a patient is greater than that from husband to wife as a patient. On the other hand, the answer "Feel happy due to the present full life" accounted for 62.9% of the males and 74.6% of the females.
