The purpose of this study is to examine how we recognize different tone colors of musical instruments. Color-imagination is taken as the key of each cognition toward different tone colors. Piano, violin, cello, flute, trumpet and marimba were selected as the musical instruments for this study. Two experiments were conducted in the study. In the first experiment, the subjects were conceptually inquired the impression toward each tone color using SD-scales and the association with color. The subjects showed various responses toward different instruments. Main responses of color-imagination were as in following. Piano: white, black, light gray and vivid red. Violin: dark brown, vivid yellow. Cello: dark brown, dark red and grayish brown, Flute: pale red purple, pale blue green, pale green, pale yellow, pale pink, pale blue, light gray, light blue green and light red purple. Trumpet: vivid yellow, vivid yellow green, vivid orange, vivid red and bright yellow. Marimba: dark brown and deep orange. In the second experiment, 17 real piano-tones were used. Tones were C3, A3, C4 ,Db4, D4 , Eb4, E4 , F4, F♯4, G4 , G♯4, A4 , Bb4, C5 , A5 and C6. The subjects were asked their impressions and the association of color-imagenation toward each tone-stimulus. Major responses of the subjects were as in follwing. 128 colors were used to describe their color-imagination. Many vivid colors were selected in all responses. The remarkable tendency can not be founded in selecting colors. Colors and color-tones were changed according to the pitch of tone. Particularly on four DO, many subjects described their color-imaginations using changing imagination of the color from dark red to pale red.
