This study is to examine elementarily the relation of music and color images, in view of synaesthesia (color hearing). Method. Subjects. 165 junior college students were used as Ss. Experimental stimuli (music). A. Spring Song・・・Mendelssohn B. Golliwog's cake Walk・・・Debussy C. Waltz op.34 No.2・・・Chopin D. Trauer Marsch・・・Chopin E. Military Polonaise・・・Chopin F. Waltz op.39 No.15・・・Brahms G. Moon Light Sonate (3d.)・・・Beethoven H. Ritter von Steckenpferd・・・Schumann I. Waltstein・・・Beethoven J. Hungarian Rhapsody No.2・・・Liszt Color sample. Practical Color Cordinate System (Japan) Neural tone (white ~ Black, 9 grades), Vivid tone (24), Deep tone (12), High bright tone (12), Bright tone (12), Dark tone (9), Dull tone (6), Grayish tone (6), Pale tone (6), Light tone (8). Total ; 104 colors Procedure. The subjects were instructed to listen to the stimulus music and describe the content of image freely, if they imagine to see any color. Results. l) The contents of color images are shown in Table 1. Almost all subjects imagined some colors; About 60 % of subjects described over two colors. 2) In case the musical feelings are "comfortable" and "easy", subjects imagined colorful, light tone, mainly cool colors. But, as the musical feelings, "dark" and "heavy", increased, dark tone and neural tone showed an upward tendency. 3) The connection of red or yellow or orange and black were observed in group 4 (music B), in particular. I think that an irritating feeling appeared in this connection. 4) To the music, "light", "vivid" and "cheerful" feelings, color responses were apt to be vivid tone and bright tone. 5) The variation of musical compornents, tempo, harmony, and feelings, and the variation of color responses corresponded delicately (Table 5).
