The metropolis was endowed with natural beauty changing in a season after another. The nobles of Heian Dynasty keenly felt the beauty, which was the source of their annual events. In the enjoyment of poetry and orchestral music, they often forgot the time till late at night. The events were so gorgeous and elegant that they learned various accomplishments by taking part in them and finally scquired the generous and graceful character befitting the nobility. The women, too, by joining the events natrally came to have broader outlook including mono no aware (subtle sensitivity to changeable nature), introspection, recognition of their standpoint and social responsibility. Thus their character as human beings was formed. I think the feminine arts and handicrafts were also encouraged and advanced as they were necessary for women in some events. Among others, I examined Hiina asobi (Playing with dolls), Tango no sekku (the Boys' Festival), Tanabata (the Festival of the Weaver), and Choyo no sekku (the Chrysanthemum Festival), appeared in the literature of Heian Dynasty, placing emphasis on their origins, contents, and objectives.
