Recently ready-made clothes have made remarkable progress both in number and quality, especially girls' ready-made dresses are conspicuously in demand. The purpose of this study is, through on-the-spot investigations, to throw some light upon the following problems: 1. What do mothers demand for their children's ready-made dresses? 2. How are the girls' ready-made dresses on the market? 3. What kind of ready-made dresses are worn by the children in their daily life? 4. What are the merits and demerits of girls' ready-made dresses? Thus I would like to know how such dresses should be improved. The mothers I asked for their opinions were picked at random out of those who live in Hiroshima Prefecture and its vicinity and have daughters between the ages of 2 and 10; they were 400 in number. The children I investigated were those who were walking along the busy streets in Hiroshima, apparently in ready-made dresses, between the ages of 2 and 10 and some children at certain elementary schools in the city; they were about 400 in number. The sales survey includes the department stores and children's clothes specialty stores in the city. The manufacturing survey includes ready-made clothes manufacturing factories and the likes in the city. The mothers' opinions were collected by the investigators' personal visits to individual homes. The selling situation, buyers' needs and the manufacturing time were also checked up on the spot. I have found as a result that there were large discrepancies between the needs of the consumers of ready-made girls' dresses and the dresses on the market at the present. time. For example, mothers want the dresses with front opening while most dresses in the stores and actually worn by the children have opening on the back. Mothers want front opening dresses because then the children can wear them by themselves without being helped by others. But the manufacturers say that back-opening ones are simpler in design and look gorgeous. Mothers want dresses with snaps and buttons but those with fasteners are many on the market because they are easily made in less time. The consumers want the sizes standardized but it seems difficult to realize it. Some consumers, however, are indifferent to the size. Mothers are much interested in their children's clothes and they are responsible for buying them, but as children grow up to the age of four or five, they begin to have their own opinions about their dresses and are inclined to get what they want. This tendency grows stronger as they become older until finally they insist on their own choice. There is little difference in the choice among mothers of diverse ages or of having children of diverse ages or those living in the city or in the country, the fact of which is convenient to the designers, manufacturers and salesmen. Consequently, the designers, manufacturers and salesmen should cooperate, taking into consideration the needs of the consumers, and make better and more convenient girls' readymade dresses.
