This paper is to investigate the history and business situation of the national banks in Osaka, and then figure out their distinctive characteristics when compared with their counterparts in other provinces or prefectures. Osaka used to boast of its prosperity as the commercial center in the Edo Period. However, suffering from the institutional transformation in the early years of Meiji Era, Osaka witnessed serious recession and was replaced by Tokyo as the commercial centre. By the late 1870s, industrial economy begun to flourish in Osaka, and then Osaka itself developed into a modern metropolis only second to Tokyo. The national banks there, fourteen of which were originated in Osaka and the other four migrated from other provinces, made great contribution to the development of modern industry in Osaka. The national banks in Osaka had two outstanding features. On the one hand, with several exceptions, the majority of the shareholders and managers of those banks were merchants. On the other, when compared with their counterparts in other provinces or prefectures, the national banks in Osaka were more intimately connccted with modern industrial economy.
