The objective of this research is to throw light on how the remaining of an elderly person with dementia can be displayed, and her voluntary increased, by fulfilling a social role. An intervention experiment (preparing a social role suitable for each individual and creating an environment in which individuals can display their remaining faculties) was performed on an elderly person with dementia in day care and the investigation focused on behavioral aspects before and after the intervention experiment from the perspective of voluntary. The subject was an elderly lady with dementia, A, whose will and voluntary had significantly deteriorated. The intervention experiment involved measuring the base line prior to the experiment, and then intervening by deciding on a suitable role for A (intervention period was 49 times over two months). A pre and post intervention comparison made clear that while before the intervention A showed little change in expression and her behavior was noticeably passive, after the intervention she behaved more actively and showed greater voluntary. In addition, from interviews with five members of day care staff who participated in the intervention experiment, we learned that their attitude to caring underwent a change in that they took greater interest in A and other day care patients and came to respect their voluntary.
