We opened 6 computer assisted English classes in 1997. We have three reasons for organizing such classes. Firstly, We want to increase the variety of English classes. Secondly, most of the class time should be allotted for the students' task of practicing the skills of language learning. Finally, the use of 50 personal computers in a class will enable each student to study English at his own pace. To make adequate preparations for the classes, two of us went to Chiba University to inspect the computer assisted English classes in December of 1996. The results of their research in English teaching have revealed that the development of one's listening ability has a considerable effect in improving his other abilities in English. They have evolved "the three round method" for the development of listening skills, and developed the courseware accordingly. Following the results of their research, we decided that priority should be given to the listening activities. Near the end of the second semester, we used a questionnaire to survey the students' attitudes to the classes. Some interesting information was obtained through the questionnaire. The experience of computer assisted English teaching has also taught us a lot of things. For example, such a method alters the traditional role of the teacher greatly. Because it is possible for each student to attend to a different task in a class, it is necessary to prepare well-designed class-work for the students with various interests and abilities.
