After discussing the question of how we can make the students active in English classes, we arrived at the conclusion that we should make some investigations to answer it. This paper shows two investigations and makes suggestions based on them. Firstly, the English immersion program is considered to be an effective method to positively motivate the students to take part in English courses. To know the advantages and disadvantages of the program, two of us went to Keio University and Asia University to inspect the English classes conducted according to this method. As a result, we have picked up the new idea that it is important to change from the method of simple knowledge transmission to that of problem discovery. Secondly, we need to know in what aspects the students are weak in order to organize effective English classes. Every teacher knows that the students have some weak points, but one teacher does not have the same knowledge as another does. We gave a common examination to the freshmen from all the faculties to make sure of our personal knowledge. The examination extends over five aspects of English: selectional restrictions, subject-predicate relations, causal relations, sentence parsing, and connectives. What we had learned by experience was verified. The result indicates the need for English teachers to bring together information about students' common mistakes and difficulty in studying English.
