Anchors of 'patent' or 'stockless' type are generally used for merchant ships but Japanese type anchors have been most commonly used for Japanese fishing boats less than 200 GT. Many reports on the holding power of the former two types of anchor have been published but yet there is no report on that of Japanese type anchor. Some field experiments were carried out on the holding power of Japanese typeanchor by measuring the tensile strength of the anchor rope on board the R.V. " Kakusui ", 20 GT, on September 29 and 30, 1969 at the neighboring waters off Nagasaki Port where the sea bed is very flat ranging from 8.7 to 13 meters in depth and the nature of bottom is as shown by the symbols of M, MS and Ssh. In this series of experiments, roped anchors (61.4 and 80.8Kg) were dragged from the stern of the research boat with several constant thrust of propelling power, and the tensile strength of rope was measured for each thrust power. The maximum value was obtained at the beginning of running anchor and this maximum value was considered as the maximum holding power of the anchor. For example, in case a 61.4Kg anchor was used on the seabed M measuring 13 meters in depth, the holding power of the anchor at the paid out length of 40 meters and 70 meters was 330Kg and 390Kg, respectively. The experimental result are as shown in Figs. 10 and 11. When the thrust of the propelling power was continuously increased, the tensile strength of anchor rope also increased to attain the first maximum value (may be just biting anchor) and, after once decreasing, increased again to the maximum at the beginning of running anchor. The difference between the two values of maximum tensile strength of the anchor rope was 0.9W~1.2W.日本形錨の把駐力に関する実験結果は次の通りである. 1) 錨重量80.8kgの底質Mにおける最大把駐力は,錨索長40m (3 D)で330kg (4.1W) 70m (5 D)で390kg (4.8W),底質Sshでは錨索長50m (5 D)および80m (8 D)でそれぞれ595kg (7.4W), 675kg (8.4W)であった. 2) 錨重量61.4kgの最大把駐力は,底質M Sの場合錨索長30m (3 D), 70m (8 D)でそれぞれ260kg (4.2W), 223kg (3.6W),底質Sshでは,錨索長50m (5 D)および70m (8 D)でそれぞれ398kg (6.5W), 480kg (7.8W)であった. 3) 投錨後初期かき込み時の把駐力の極大値は走錨直前の最大把駐力より0.9W~1.2W低い値であった. 4) 錨の把駐力は走錨直前の錨索の最大張力であると考える.
