The tolerances of parasitic Pythium porphyrae in the thalli of Porphyra yezoensis against drying and freeze-preservation were examined. Thalli of laver infected in situ were dried in a room or a desicator of constant humidity. From a water content below about 50% the survival rate of parasitic Pythium decreased gradually, and reached zero mostly at a water content below about 30%. Freeze-preser-vation of infected thalli containing three different water contents at -20℃ revealed that parasitic Pythium could not survive after 5 to 10-day storage at 30 to 50% water content or after 5 to 15-day storage at 80% water content. Two test strains of Pythium porphyrae died after 10-day storage at -20℃ in 50% sea water, whereas those with oospores showed survival rate of 10 to 30% even after 20-day storage. After the infected thalli of Porphyra were dried to 30% water content or stored for 10 days under freezing at 30 or 50% water content, the thalli were subjected to cultivation in enriched sea water so as to prove that almost all thalli recovered from red rot disease. The results proposed for the prevention and elimination of red rot disease the drying of infected laver to the water content of 20 to 30% or the freeze-preservation at the water content of 20 to 40% for one to two weeks was effective and practical.
