Applying high D. C. voltage to the electrolytic poles,an arc discharge takes placethrough the gas film between cathode and electrolyte,and the cathode is heated rapidly.By such electrolytic heating,we can heat metal pieces quickly, locally and in nonoxidatedstate. Until now, however, it has been utilized only in the field of heattreatment of steels.We propose here a new application of this electrolytic heating method in the fieldof welding of Metals. For this purpose,we analyze the mechanism of this process anddecide the most suitable conditions for the efficient heating. In the next stage,variousfactors which have influences upon welding are studied. In this paper,as the first ofthe forthcoming successive papers,the relation between temperature and concentrationof electrolyte, heating rate and heating efficiency are reported. In addition,electrolytic heating by A. C. current is also discussed
